Ebook About INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * One of NPR's Best Books of 2020"A provocative, absorbing read." — People “A feast of a read... I finished A Good Neighborhood in a single sitting. Yes, it’s that good.” —Jodi Picoult, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Small Great Things and A Spark of LightIn Oak Knoll, a verdant, tight-knit North Carolina neighborhood, professor of forestry and ecology Valerie Alston-Holt is raising her bright and talented biracial son, Xavier, who’s headed to college in the fall. All is well until the Whitmans—a family with new money and a secretly troubled teenage daughter—raze the house and trees next door to build themselves a showplace. With little in common except a property line, these two families quickly find themselves at odds: first, over an historic oak tree in Valerie's yard, and soon after, the blossoming romance between their two teenagers. A Good Neighborhood asks big questions about life in America today—what does it mean to be a good neighbor? How do we live alongside each other when we don't see eye to eye?—as it explores the effects of class, race, and heartrending love in a story that’s as provocative as it is powerful.Book A Good Neighborhood: A Novel Review :
It may feel good to the conscience to read the tragic story of A Good Neighborhood. It’s not about a hero with a fatal flaw but about the lack of power of ethnic minorities. By reading this account, the upper middle class reader can feel that she’s experienced catharsis—purged of the feeling of guilt for traditional racial oppression. And, without divulging plot spoilers, there is admittedly a lot to admire in A Good Neighborhood; the mining of a traditional art form (Greek tragedy), foreshadowing mixed with surprising plot developments and literary and cultural allusions that are apropos. But one must finally conclude that A Good Neighborhood is not a book that is going to help the healing of racial injustice in America. Apart from a few details the story is incredibly cliched; the rich white man who assumes a black neighbor is a handyman and the formerly poverty stricken wife who cannot admit that her husband is attracted to his own stepdaughter. It’s a book that simply repeats the standard liberal view of the South and its racial/socioeconomic problems as much as Fox News seems to have crimes by undocumented immigrants on endless replay.Simply repeating one side’s perspective—even as artfully as Therese Anne Fowler—doesn’t really advance the dialogue. It just makes one side feel unrepresented and the other self-satisfied.The contemporary reader deserves a more nuanced and original contribution to America’s quest to see beyond the color of a person’s skin. It may feel good to look down on the antagonists in this novel, but do we really need another variation on the same woke theme? A Good Neighborhood is not a dialogue between respectful opposing perspectives but mere hectoring that is more likely to lead to smug consciences than real change. This is by far the most hateful book I have ever read. Everything and everyone is disgusting except one. I would like to ask the author what was the point of writing this? I am amazed at all the high ratings. I have begun to distrust rave book reviews. The author takes swipes at almost everything in today's society. Racism, sexism, politics, ecology, environmentalism, first responders, young people, old people the list goes on and on. The ending, if you don't see it coming is so jolting and disturbing that I can't get the picture out of my mind. And that is not something I want in my mind!! Particularly at this time of pandemic, these are not the thoughts we want to spread around. My advice, do your research before you buy this.
